Twelve Extraordinary Women

How God Shaped Women of the bible by John MacArthur

Welcome Ladies,  to a what's going to be a truly amazing, insightful and edifying study into the sovereign grace of God at work in the lives of these ordinary women. In this study, we will be using John MacArthur's book Twelve Extraordinary Women as a guide. As a ministry devoted to theologically sound we aim to uncover the richness of God's redemptive plan as it unfolds in the stories of these twelve truly ordinary but ... amazingly extraordinary women.

Biblical theology teaches us that the story of Scripture is not primarily about human success but about God's faithfulness to His covenant people through the work of His Son, Jesus Christ. As we examine the lives of Eve, Sarah, Rahab, Ruth, and others, we will see that their "extraordinary" nature was not in their own character, but in the life-changing power of God's grace working through them despite their flaws and failures. Just as God's grace is working through our lives despite our flaws and failure as well.

Why this particular study?

  • To Understand God's Sovereignty: We will explore how God uses every detail of His creation, including the struggles and triumphs of women, to accomplish His redemptive purposes.

  • To Ground Our Identity in Christ: The world offers many competing narratives about womanhood. Through this study, we will be discipled in what biblical womanhood truly means—not as a social construct, but as a calling to display the glory of Christ in our unique roles as women.

  • To See the Gospel in Every Story: We will learn to see how each woman's story points to the ultimate story of salvation through Jesus Christ. As MacArthur so effectively shows, the gospel is woven throughout every narrative in the Bible, and these women's lives are no exception.

  • For Practical Discipleship: The struggles these women faced—doubt, loss, waiting, and serving—are the same trials that we women face today. By studying God's work in their lives, we will find guidance and encouragement for our own spiritual walk.

The Twelve Extraordinary Women

This study moves through the lives of the twelve women featured in the book, providing weekly lessons and discussion questions for personal reflection and our group study.

1. Eve: The Mother of All Living

  • The Big Idea: Understanding the consequence of sin and the promise of redemption in Genesis 3.
  • Our Lens: Focus on the gracious promise of a Redeemer, the "Seed of the woman" (Genesis 3:15).

2. Sarah: Hoping Against Hope

  • The Big Idea: Faith in God's promises despite a lack of evidence and human weakness.
  • Our Lens: Examining God's faithfulness to His covenant with Abraham, even when His people falter. This is a powerful lesson in God's unilateral grace.

3. Rahab: A Horrible Life Redeemed

  • The Big Idea: God's redemptive power reaching even the outcast and the marginalized.
  • Our Lens: Glorifying God's sovereign plan to save a Canaanite harlot and include her in the lineage of Christ, illustrating His grace that breaks all barriers.

4. Ruth: Loyalty and Love

  • The Big Idea: God's providence at work in the life of a loyal and loving widow.
  • Our Lens: Unpacking the concept of the kinsman-redeemer as a foreshadowing of Christ, our ultimate Redeemer.

5. Hannah: A Portrait of Feminine Grace

  • The Big Idea: The power of persistent prayer and total dedication to God.
  • Our Lens: Analyzing Hannah's prayer as a model of worship that exalts God's sovereignty and righteousness, rather than just focusing on her own needs.

Additional women covered in this study include Mary, Anna, the Samaritan woman, Martha and Mary, Mary Magdalene, and Lydia. Each of their stories provides insights into themes such as humble obedience, steadfast faith, Christ's offer of salvation to all, the priority of worship, redemption, and a life reflecting biblical wisdom and humble service.
